About LWC London Wine Competition

The London Wine Competition is a prestigious international wine competition organised by the Beverage Trade Network. Its aim is to recognise, reward, and promote wine brands that are designed to resonate with and appeal to specific consumer groups. For any wine brand to secure a place on a retailer’s shelf or a restaurant’s wine list—and, more importantly, to maintain that presence—it must be marketable, consumer-driven, and not merely produced in the hope of finding a willing buyer or seller.

This is precisely what sets the London Wine Competition apart. It highlights and celebrates those wine brands that consumers actively seek and which demonstrate clear market value for trade buyers.

The competition evaluates wines based on three key criteria:

  1. Quality

  2. Value for Money

  3. Packaging

To win an award, a wine must not only meet the highest quality standards but also offer exceptional value for both the trade and the consumer. Additionally, it must stand out visually, both on the shelf and behind the bar.

Quality Wines are assessed for their appeal to their target market, taking into account a detailed chemical analysis. Quality is evaluated across several key characteristics: Appearance, Aroma, Body, Taste, and Aftertaste.

Value for Money This category focuses on how well a wine is priced relative to the quality it offers. The higher the quality in relation to its price, the better the value score.

Packaging Judges evaluate how a wine’s packaging will be perceived by consumers, particularly in the Off-Premise market. Key elements of assessment include label design, clarity of information, closure type, and overall aesthetic. It is not concerned with the packaging type (such as boxes or bags) but how the wine would be perceived on a retail shelf amongst numerous other products.

Commercial Relevance Importantly, all winners in the London Wine Competition provide future trade buyers—whether from supermarkets, specialist wine retailers, casual dining establishments, or high-end restaurants—with the assurance that these wines will resonate with their customers.

Cross-Industry Recognition The competition also acknowledges the outstanding talent and expertise that exists throughout the entire wine supply chain. This includes winemakers, growers, and producers, as well as specialist importers, wholesalers, designers, packaging experts, and brand development teams—all of whom play a vital role in creating wines that have a strong market presence.

Consumer Awareness Winners of the London Wine Competition receive Gold, Silver, or Bronze awards and are supported by a robust consumer awareness campaign. This includes promotion via social media channels and wine comparison apps, aimed at raising the profile of this prestigious global competition.

Competition Organisers The London Wine Competition is an exclusive initiative of the Beverage Trade Network, a US-based group that focuses on drinks events, services, business, and publishing. Their mission is to connect drinks producers and brand owners with buyers, distributors, and retailers who can bring their products to market.
